In the 2 volume
History of Kumaon Encyclopedia written by Late Badri Dutt Pandey, there is a mention of Pt. Nain Singh Rawat. Born in 21 October 1830, Pt. Rawat gets the credit for preparing the map of Tibet and locating the geographical location of its capital Lhasa. He also gets the credit for tracing the origin of river Brahmaputra. Pt. Rawat was a surveyor in the British team and he was given the task of tracing the geographical boundary of Tibet. In addition he also traced the trade route from Nepal to Tibet --- An achievement for which he was awarded with Highest British Civilian Honour. He received other honours as well. In 2004, the Indian Government released a postage stamp in his name. What makes Pt. Nain Singh Rawat's work extraordinary is the fact that he not only had the courage & initiative to trace the extremely difficult unfamiliar terrain, he also had the intelligence & precision to understand the intricacies of the surveying work. It is said that he was so precise about his measurements that he every step he took was approx. 37 inches long. He
traced all these routes and geography on foot and most of the times disguised as a Buddhist Monk. (
A book which hails Pt. Nain Singh Rawat as a Hero and a Google Doodle
