The Farm laws got replealed last week. Yesterday, the year long Farmers' protest also got wound up. The Narendra Modi led NDA Government's assurances to farmers seem to be working. Whether the Govt. delivers on its promises to farmers or not, ONLY time will tell. We, as people have seen so many U-turns of the present Govt.
Since the very beginning, I held the belief that the farmers' protest against farm laws was in reality a protest of the people. People like you and I. Farmers became the flag bearer just by some coincidence. As far as I see it, the now-repealed farm laws were meant to benefit the Businesses (Corporate) and harm the people (Consumer). Farmers (producers) had no real stake in it.
But sadly, majority of people never understood the negative effect the farm laws if implemented would have on them. The negative effect would have been : An Increase in food prices. How? ...This way. Here's an example.
At present people can buy wheat directly from the farmers. The Minimum Support Price helps people (as buyers) know what they should or should not pay for a quintal of wheat. Now imagine a situation where we as people don't know the ideal price. In addition, there are companies which directly buy from the farmer and package wheat flour at Rs. 60 a kilogram. In such a situation, people as consumers will not only have to buy wheat flout at high price, they will have limited choice as a buyer as well. This is a very clear explanation of the effect of farm laws on people.
Those who are still not convinced, must understand that bringing in Corporates into the food business only makes food costly. But since govts across globe are closer to the big businesses than to the people, hence in all certainty, the Narendra Modi Govt. will bring back the same farm laws after Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand elections.
Going by people's silence over farm laws, people must be ready to pay high prices for food in coming years!
